Fixing a regional newsletter for IEEE
I am automating the IEEE Lone Star Section newsletter so it looks right in every inbox.
I work with the IEEE Lone Star Section, part of IEEE Region 5, on how its newsletter gets made. It was one big Word table pasted into an email, and it looked different in every email program.
It was also too big. At about 125 KB, Gmail cut off the bottom sections. The events list was copied by hand from IEEE's events site.
So far I have built a pull from the public vTools events feed, which finds the section's events on its own, and an email-safe version of the events section. I rebuilt the layout three ways, with a plain-text version, and wrote up what is broken and a five-step path to fix it.
Sending stays with IEEE's own mailing service. Next come an authoring template, an intake form, and a web archive.
